Blockstorm Impressions

"Break, Build and Destroy"

Blockstorm takes the basic elements of a first person shooter and combines them with a fully destructible voxel block based environment. Literally any piece of the various multiplayer maps can be destroyed and altered to assist you in combat. Some games of this style only offer some destruction where Blockstorm lets you destroy any aspect you want of it. It was especially helpful with creating shortcuts or blocking off enemies from certain areas and great chokepoints to take advantage of. The maps themselves are actually really well designed and each carry a unique design from the humble metro level to the quite vibrant harbour one. The flow to them is really good and they always seemed to fit the right size for the fairly large sized matches. The rounds run by in decent time hitting that sweet fifteen minute spot that most shooters provide, though I haven't had the scores hit the max before that yet. This is fine as you're trying to get good timed matches, but sometimes I'd like to see the team win quick and that may be caused by the negative score for deaths or other mishaps. Teams are selected beforehand allowing you to customize some small aspect of your classes from weapons to special items. This helps create a diverse battlefield with the assault rifle being my particular weapon of choice. I also quite like the ability to build with basic blocks to create defences and platforms from which help when trying to reach other areas. Another really neat aspect is characters which you can choose from many or create your own. Online I've already seen Bender; Mr T and some other crazy looking people. It's this level of customization that will keep players interested and create unique moments all of the time. The combat at this point feels well balanced and keeps a good pace from which I am focused. I didn't notice a real chat system other than text and I'd like to talk to people as it's somewhat of a cooperative shooter. The modes so far are quite good, and hopefully we will see some more differing ones as the changes happen in early access. Blockstorm has been a blast thus far with the developers vs press session being especially memorable with really press facing off and everyone having a great time. With games a lot of magic is the experiences you get and Blockstorm helps capture that. From there I encourage you to check out our gameplay of the session below for a walkthrough type look at the game and of course follow here for further impressions, along with a review of Blockstorm at which a time the game is completely finished. Other than that I look forward to seeing how it develops while on Steam Early Access as it shows a lot of promise at this point.
